About FutureFolk
FutureFolk is a grassroots, volunteer-led community response to a global need for systemic change.
We desire to respectfully acknowledge that we are located in Amiskwacîwâskahikan, colonially known as Edmonton, on Treaty 6 territory. The land of Treaty 6 territory was once both home and a gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples, including the Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway/ Saulteaux/Anishinaabe, Inuit, and many others whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to influence our vibrant communities. We are dedicated to doing the work of educating others, and making steps towards Reconciliation in our everyday lives. We honour and protect those who allow us to walk beside them on this path.
We are urgently raising funds to put a down payment on an existing structure to use as a mutual aid hub, co-working space, and more. This building would also serve as the "Foundations" for FutureFolk's Core Team and an additional number of additional FutureFolk goals and projects. More information about this building and our fundraising goals are "here".
FutureFolk’s first goal is to provide opportunities and jobs to people who are subject to systemic forms of oppression. This community, our community, includes but is not limited to people who are: women, trans, non-binary, intersex, Black, Indigenous, non-Black people of colour, Members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, Deaf, deafened, hard of hearing, disabled, neuro-divergent, single parents, and more.
Our team is passionate about finding solutions for systemic issues, and financing the research and programming to make them a reality. We are creating a more inclusive, trauma informed, and accountable world, facilitated through fair wage employment, community involvement, as well as green energy and living pursuits. This is only possible through actively seeking to engage with mutual respect, transparency, accountability, and intersectional inclusivity. We value building these long term relationships with other communities, creatives, and small businesses, and believe our ideals will enable exponential growth and improved quality of life for many.
Our second goal is to provide safe and supervised hubs for creativity and co-working, improving sense supports for systemically oppressed groups. We will do this without making sacrifices as to the quality of mentorship provided, the accessibility for people of all backgrounds and income, or the level of respect we afford to all we interact with.
We have a large number of goals and plans and will add them to this site as timing allows. For more information, visit "Projects" in the menu, or select the images above for a short writeup on some of our goals and plans.
Why?
Transparency is important.
Here are a few of FutureFolk's Motivations, what we recognise as only some of the Obstacles to an equitable and accessible world. Here our Goals for how we would like to respond, and how we plan to tackle each obstacle to equitable, accessible, and intersectional Quality of Life.
